Horace Herbert Adams (21 July 1884 in Porter, Van Buren, MI - 06 Dec 1976 Paw Paw, Van Buren, MI) was also known as "Bert" Adams. He married Iva E. Woods (21 July 1886 in Porter, Van Buren, MI - 09 Nov 1968 Lawton, Van Buren, MI). She was the daughter of Villetta Wood (b. 1856 in MI).

Mr. Horace H. Adams, 208 N. LaGrave St., Paw Paw, Mich. Passed away last evening at Lakeview Hospital, Paw Paw. Mr. Adams was born July 21, 1884 in Porter Township, the son of Franklin and Anna Adams. Mr. Adams was preceded in death by his wife Iva in 1968. He was a Paw Paw area resident since 1916 and had practiced Law for the past 71 years. He was a member of Paw Paw Lodge No. 25 F & AM, the VB County Bar Association, the Michigan Bar Association, he was a former Prosecuting Attorney for VB County, former United States Commissioner, and a member of the Shrine in Grand Rapids, and a member of the United Methodist Church, Paw Paw. He was a graduate of Lawton High School and later the University of Michigan Law School in 1905. Surviving are a son, Horace of Lawton, 2 grandchildren, Robert of Key West, Florida and a granddaughter Maryjo of Ann Arbor. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:30 from the United Methodist Church, Paw Paw with the Rev. William V. Payne officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, Lawton. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Lakeview Community Hospital Special Equipment Fund. Friends will be received at the Hawley Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening. PAW PAW -- Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon for Horace H. Adams, a prominent member of Van Buren's legal community for half a century.

Adams, 92, died Monday evening at Lake View Hospital, Paw Paw. A resident of Paw Paw since 1916, Adams practiced law in Michigan for 71 years, most of them in partnership with his son Horace W.

Adams served as Van Buren's prosecuting attorney from 1916-20, and at one time was a U.S. Commissioner, comparable to present office of federal court magistrate. He was also a member of the Shrine Club.

He was a graduate of Lawton High School and the University of Michigan Law School, in 1905.

Surviving in addition to his son are two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2:30 at the United Methodist Church in Paw Paw. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery, Lawton. The Hawley Funeral Home in Paw Paw is handling arrangements.

Passed away June 1, 2005 in Russia. Horace was born March 30, 1918 in Ann Arbor, Michigan the son of Horace Herbert and Iva (Wood) Adams. He was life-long resident of Van Buren County (Paw Paw & Lawton). He was a graduate of Paw Paw High School, Class of 1936 where he excelled in music, sports and academics. He received his BS degree from the University of Michigan (major in political science and botany) 1940 and his Jurist Doctorate degree from the University of Michigan Law School 1942. Horace served as an attorney for the US Air Force Command in Dayton, Ohio during World War II. Horace practiced law with his father in Paw Paw throughout his entire career. In 1950 Horace was elected as prosecuting attorney of Van Buren County and served two terms. He helped form the Lake View Community Hospital Authority and for several years was the President of the Michigan Community Hospital Authority. He was past president of the Mattawan school board and a life-member of the Van Buren Youth Camp board. Horace has served as an attorney for several villages, townships, and corporations as well as serving on their Board of Directors. He was a member of the Paw Paw Lions Club, Farm Bureau, and active member of the Van Buren County Bar Association since 1946. Horace was a member of the Paw Paw-Lawton Lodge # 25 F&AM and a generous patron of Western Michigan University's Music Department. Horace W. Adams was awarded a Certificate of Proclamation by the State of Michigan celebrating his 58 years of legal service in the state of Michigan as he "contributed to the growth and progress of the Great Lakes State with his personal sense of dedication, integrity, and respect for humanity. His hobbies include international traveler as he passed away in Moscow while exploring the Russian waterways with his beloved wife, Mary. On June 24, 1949 Horace was united in marriage to Mary Louise Pugsley, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Robert W. Adams and his wife Linda Adams of Boise, Idaho daughter, Dr. Maryjo Adams Cochran and her husband, John Cochran III of Huntsville, Texas; three grandchildren, William Christian Adams and his wife, Maria Adams of Duluth, MN; John IV and Hallie Cochran of Huntsville, Texas. Family will receive friends Monday, 5-8 p.m. at the Adams Funeral Home, Paw Paw. A Masonic memorial service will be held Monday evening 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, Paw Paw with Rev. Tom Abbott officiating.
