Isaac Leonard Bates ( 12 Jul 1835 - 18 Jan 1927) was born in Syracuse, Oswego, NY and died in Groton, Brown, SD and is buried in the Groton Cemetery, Brown, SD. He married Emily Lorainia Adams (10 April 1839 - 08 Sep 1911) on 22 Feb 1866. They had three children:
1. Franklin Adams Bates ( 06 Sep 1867 - 28 Aug 1924) married Laura Perkins (23 Sep 18??). They had a son Franklin Perkins Bates.
2. Sarah Sophia Bates (18 Sep 1869 - 10 Feb 1970) married Jason Dustin Feller (27 Mar 1869 - 31 Jul 1942). They had Violet Ethel Feller, Emily Laura Feller, Edith Sarah Feller, and a son.
3. Minnie Leonora Bates ( 14 Jun 1876 - 28 Nov 1965) married William Henry Anstiss (05 Aug 1869 - 24 Dec 1959). They had Frank Bates Anstiss, Minnie Calista Anstiss, Leonard Clyde Anstiss, Alyce Emily Anstiss, William Howard Anstiss, Emerson Adams Anstiss, Mabel Lenora Anstiss, Maurice Leonard Anstiss, and Vance Meredith Anstiss.
Isaac Leonard Bates was a 2nd Lt. of Co. C, 3rd MI Cavalry. He enlisted in the Army 17 Sep 1861 and was discharged 5 Oct 1865. Between 1866-1869 he resided in Porter, MI, in Schoolcraft, MI from 1869-1886 and then settled in Garden Prairie, Andover PO, Brown County, SD. Bates Township is named for him. The 3rd MI Calvary fought at New Madrid, Island #10, Shiloh, against Nathan Bedford Forest at Corinth and Iuka, and other locations in TN, MS, AL, & AR.
